Like it's nickname suggests, the Monkey Tail cactus grows long, hanging stems with soft white spines that resemble hair. Being a cactus, this plant is great for beginners who are looking for something beautiful and easy to care for. When happily established, the stems produce large red flowers which contrast beautifully against the white hair-like spines.

CARE:

Prefers a warm, sunny position, though avoid harsh midday summer sun. Use a well-draining potting soil, ideally a specifically formulated cacti & succulent mix, and water only when the top 3-5cm of soil is dry (generally once a week in the spring/ summer growing season). Fertilise in spring with a cacti & succulent specific fertiliser to encourage rigorous growth and strong roots.

PLEASE NOTE:

All pictures are of plants currently for sale or previously sold at The Tropic Gardener. The plant photographed should be used as an indication of size and quality only and may not be the exact plant you receive. Form and colour will vary slightly.

Care instructions:
We recommend a quality well-draining mix to provide aeration and deter root rot. A good way to gauge if your plant needs a drink is to feel the soil with your finger. Test to see if the soils is still wet a couple centimetres down. The same test can be done with a moisture meter but be sure to sample multiple spots to get an accurate reading. Remember that the rate of watering provided is a guide only and should be adjusted depending on your potting medium and the environment in which you keep your plant. Happy gardening!
